Frequently Asked Questions
Are Special Police Officers real cops?
Yes. SPOs are commissioned under D.C. Mun. Code 6A with full arrest powers within an area or premise in which the officer is employed to protect. SPOs carry out similar duties to D.C. Metro Police, such as carrying firearms, patrolling on foot, bike, or police car, responding to emergency calls, taking reports, making arrests, and testifying in court.
Can an SPO pull me over?
Yes, but it depends. If you are on the property that the SPO is employed to protect, you may be stopped. If an SPO has probable cause to believe you committed a crime, the SPO may pursue you even off the property to conduct the apprehension. The SPO cannot pull you over for general violations of the traffic code off the property (i.e., on a public roadway), and SPOs are not empowered to write citations for violations of the traffic code.
Are your services available to the general public?
Most likely. If you own or lease property in D.C., you can contract with NCRSP to provide protection, either full-time, short-term, or on a “roving patrol” basis where an officer will stop and conduct routine checks, as well as respond to emergency calls at your location.
